17.Hurricane Georges 1998

Port au Prince was left relatively unscathed, except for flooding in the low-lying area of Cite Soleil and damage to the main commercial port. Jacmel was hit by flood waters that damaged several neighborhoods and cut off road access to outlying neighborhoods. Low-lying areas around the city are also in danger of flash floods and ensuing mudslides -- as are the low-lying areas in Croix des Missions, Gonaives, Hinche, Anse a Galets, and Leogane. Satellite-derived rainfall
estimates suggest that as much as 39 inches of rain may have fallen over portions of the Dominican Republic and Haiti over a 24-hour period. Most of the deaths associated with Georges (Table 6) occurred in the Dominican Republic and Haiti, due mainly to flash flooding and subsequent mud slides in high terrain regions. 209 persons died in Haiti. Across Haiti, government officials stated that 167,332 had been left homeless by the hurricane.
