The first earthquake of magnitude 6.9 at 17 31 hours on August 21st ,2018. The tremor, which occurred around 5.30pm and reportedly lasted for about two minutes. A magnitude of 7.2 was reported at the epicentre in Venezuela. A magnitude 6.0 aftershock occurred at 0928 hours on August 22, 2018. Further to the earthquake event there were 32 aftershocks. These were evenly distributed from 21st August 2018 into 22nd August 2018. There were no reports of loss of life and serious injury. The earthquake was believed to be the largest ever in the country’s history, was reportedly felt in several other Caribbean islands, including Grenada, St Lucia and St Vincent and the Grenadines, as well as Guyana and neighbouring Venezuela.
The Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission (T&TEC) confirmed that Mt Catharine, Belmont, POS and Pashley Street Laventille, POS experienced power (electrical) outages. There were reports of temporary power outages in Arima, Valsayn, and other areas of east Trinidad, including Biche and other rural areas.
Buildings sustained structural damage, cars were flattened by falling concrete and supermarkets reported losses. There was significant loss of telecommunications following the earthquake. The Ministry of Rural Development and Local Government said reports of damages to property and homes from Tuesday's 6.9 earthquake continue to come in, with a tally of 213 reports as of Thursday, August 23, 2018. In a statement issued Thursday, the Ministry said these consist of both major and minor structural damage to private homes, adding that assessments have been completed for 146 of these reports. The majority of reports are minor structural damage such as wall cracks.
