Hurricane Janet passed between Grenada and Carriacou early on the 23rd September 1955. The storm hit Grenada with 115 mph. There was 15 inches of rain in 9 hours and very heavy wind and rain for 9 hours.
Grenada with a population of 66,000 was hard hit. The airport in Grenada was covered with debris, making it impossible for planes to land and docks and warehouses were destroyed. The roof of a hotel in St. George’s, the capital, was blown off. At the time Hurricane Janet was described as one of the worst hurricanes to hit the island with 147 deaths as a result. Much of the island was in shambles and left without drinking water after the vicious battering by Hurricane Janet. Many houses were destroyed, many more were left without roofs, the balconies of government head-quarters in St. George’s were ripped off, and the capital’s hospital and leading hotel were damaged. Hundreds were left homeless and great quantities of the island’s crops were destroyed. All bridges to the interior of the island collapsed. There was heavy damage to the spice plantations. Grenada and Carriacou were short of water and supplies following the storm. Water had to be tightly rationed due to the disruption of water supplies. The island’s entire banana and cocoa crops were destroyed. 95% of nutmeg trees and coconut trees were uprooted. 20 out of 50 schools were seriously damaged.
