Bringing NCDs to LIFE
The LIFE project is the largest cohort (follow up) study to understand chronic diseases to be undertaken in Jamaica. This island-wide study seeks to enroll 8000 adults who participated in the 2016-17 Jamaica Health and Lifestyle Survey as well as other persons 30 -70 years old living in these communities. . The CATCH Study
Professor Marshall Tulloch-Reid leads the multi-country CATCH Study - Strengthening Primary Health Care Systems to Improve Hypertension Control. Hypertension is one of the most common chronic diseases in Jamaica and when poorly controlled, it increases the risk of heart disease, stroke and kidney failure. Approximately one-third of the Jamaican population has elevated blood pressure or hypertension. Read more |

Sodium and potassium consumption in Jamaica |
A large body of research highlights the damaging effects of high sodium in the diet. The risk of hypertension and several other heart-related diseases show strong associations with high levels of sodium intake. On the other hand, higher potassium intake has been associated with lower blood pressure. Considering this, the World Health Organization recommends that individuals worldwide reduce sodium consumption and increase potassium intake to improve health. |
