Medical Alumni – assisting through the 1948 Society

In 2020, the 1948 Society continues to assist medical students and in 2020 awarded scholarships valued at a total of US$14,000.00

The 1948 Society was launched at the UWI Medical Alumni Association (UWIMAA) Reunion in Nassau in November 2003. The newly installed UWI Chancellor Sir George Alleyne endorsed the 1948 Society and made the first donation of US$1,000.00.

In 2006 as funds became available, medical alumni in the 1948 Society began to award scholarships to needy medical students on the 3 existing UWI campuses and the UWI Medical School in Nassau, Bahamas. The scholarships awarded to date amount to USD 198,000.00.

In addition, in 2013 a mini Fellowship of USD 5,000 was awarded to Dr. Ayana Crichlow to study Hand microsurgery techniques in a renowned institution in India.

In 2014, US$42,000.00 was donated to the Alfred Carnegie Surgical Skills Lab at Mona.

In 2020, 1948 Society scholarships of US$1,000.00 amounting to US$14,000.00 were awarded as follows:

Mona :  Jordanna Guthrie, Kudawasha Ababio, Joel Williams.

Cave Hill : Christiana Fenty, Adanna Moore, Joanna Joseph.

St. Augustine : Hermidar Mentore, Shekeela Stroude. Avinash Dalchan with the highest GPA of 3.89 received the annual Knox Hagley Memorial Scholarship – US$2,000.00.

Nassau : Lheyintz Vincent, Patraneka Watson, Caneicea Bowles, Rickeisha Hamilton.
