On 16 November 2016 BFUWI will be holding a panel discussion on the theme of ‘Caribbean at 50’ in conjunction with the Ramphal Institute at King’s College, London.

This will be the fourth panel discussion in the Dr Eric Williams series examining issues of importance to the Caribbean and the diaspora in London. Panellists include Professor Richard Drayton Rhodes Professor of Imperial History at King’s College, Ransford Smith, former Deputy Secretary General of CARICOM and Debbie Ransome Editor of Caribbean Intelligence. The panel will examine the progress and struggles after 50 years of independence in Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago and look to the future. They will grapple with issues such as constitutional reform: the move to republic status, retention of the Privy Council, Brexit, globalisation and the regional economy and transformation of societies to achieve greater equality.

BFUWI trustee, Susan Belgrave, says BFUWI wanted to commemorate and review this achievement in the region’s history as this year Barbados and Guyana join their sister countries in achieving this milestone.
