THE POWER OF MUSEUMS: COLLECTIONS BUILDING COMMUNITY THROUGH EDUCATION

Did you know that the University of the West Indies has research and teaching collections spanning the humanities and life sciences? These collections form the basis of 4 museums on both the Mona and St. Augustine Campuses. Research and teaching collections are the foundation of the Universities and are key to knowledge creation and sustainable development.

Mrs. Plunkett and her son Damani celebrate International Museum Day by visiting the UWI Museum.

Today,  May 18, 2022 is International Museums Day and The UWI Museum joins museums around the world in celebrating and acknowledging the potential of museums in shaping their communities. This year’s theme is ‘The Power of Museums’ and it recognizes that museums assist in:

  1. Attaining sustainability in order to contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals
  2. Innovation through digitisation and accessibility
  3. Community building through education

As part of this celebration we recognize the work of our colleagues who maintain museum, research and teaching collections throughout the UWI. Over the next four weeks, we will be featuring guest blogs on collections from the Mona and St. Augustine Campuses including the National Herbarium of Trinidad and Tobago, The Zoology Museum (St. Augustine), Special Collections (Mona Main Library) and the Map and Image Library (Mona).

Visit the UWI Museum to see our exhibition ‘Origins,’ as well as displays from the James Lee Collection (Archaeology Lab) and Map and Image Library, which provide a snapshot of the Mona Campus in the 1950s using a stereoscope and explore Jamaica’s geology and archaeological excavations on the Mona campus.

Happy International Museum Day
