Archaeology Public Lecture

The Department of History and Archaeology at UWI, Mona celebrates Archeology Week with a public lecture on Tuesday, March 6 at 7 pm at Room N3, UWI, Mona. The Lecture is entitled, “Recording and Preserving a Newly Discovered Cemetery on the UWI Mona Campus.” Dr. Stephan Lenik, Lecturer in the Department of History and Archaeology at UWI, Mona will deliver the Lecture.

His presentation will examine the ongoing work to record and to preserve the cemetery found on the UWI Mona campus in late January 2012 during the digging of a trench related to the new Basic Medical Sciences Complex.  It will highlight the difficulties involved in determining a date for the cemetery and identifying the individuals interred there.  The cemetery likely relates to Papine Estate, but at present it cannot be confirmed whether the individuals are indentured, enslaved, or free laborers. The UWI, Mona and the Jamaica National Heritage Trust has ensured that further damage to the cemetery is avoided as construction continues in order to preserve the site for future generations.

All are invited to the Lecture. For further details on the Lecture interested persons may telephone 927-1922.

The Archaeology Awareness Week is being celebrated in collaboration with the Jamaica National Heritage Trust and the Archaeological Society of Jamaica. There will also be activities held across Jamaica including an exhibition at the UWI main Library; Institute of Jamaica; St. Catherine Parish Library.
