An Introduction
The Dudley Grant Early Childhood Resource Centre is the premier facility for providing support for Early Childhood Development in Jamaica and the wider Caribbean. The Centre, which was named in honour of Mr. Dudley Ransford Brandyce (DRB) Grant (1915-1988), an outstanding educator, scholar and Early Childhood pioneer, provides invaluable service to students, practitioners, researchers and other persons who have an interest in the field.
The Centre was built in 1973 by the Bernard Van Leer Foundation of the Netherlands and was first named the Centre for Early Childhood Education (CECE). It was renamed the Dudley Grant Early Childhood Resource Centre in 1996 and since then has continued to evolve into the lead facility for promoting excellence in Early Childhood Development. The Centre is a joint project of the University of the West Indies (UWI) Institute of Education, the Ministry of Education and the Dudley Grant Memorial Trust.
Mission
The mission of the Centre is to provide a wide range of services including print and electronic support, to Early Childhood Practitioners (Para-Professionals to Post Graduate Level) in Jamaica and the Caribbean and also to wider publics interested in Early Childhood Development.
Centre Mandate
- to host and maintain the Caribbean Early Childhood (ECD) Website consistent with the National Plan of Action and that of the region, aimed at strengthening regional integration, advocacy and cooperation.
Management
The Centre is managed by a Centre Manager who is directed by a Management Committee comprising representatives from the UWI Institute of Education, the Ministry of Education and the Dudley Grant Memorial Trust. It also houses the Secretariat of the Dudley Grant Memorial Trust.
Affiliations
The Centre works closely with the Early Childhood Commission as well as agencies, institutions and associations involved with advancing Early Childhood Development through activities such as curriculum development, resource centre upgrading, transition between the preschool and primary levels and the integration of Early Childhood services.
