1.  General Information 

Candidates are invited to apply for one of the following Degree Streams in the University of the West Indies Graduate Programme in Natural Resource and Environmental Management:

Master Degrees 

  • Integrated Urban and Rural Environmental Management
  • Sustainable Urbanisation
  • Disaster Management*

*offered in association with the Centre for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management.

a)   Pre-requisite qualifications

  • A good honours Degree in a related subject (or equivalent qualifications and work experience) is required for entry into the above M.Sc. Streams. The selection of candidates is made on a competitive basis, owing to the constraints on the number of places available. 

b)  Application Procedures       

Submission of Applications:

All application forms must be submitted online using websites: www.mona.uwi.edu/postgrad or www.uwimona.edu.jm.'

Referee Reports:

Referee Reports must be submitted in sealed and signed envelopes.

Valid Applications include the following documents: 

  • The completed online application form
  • Two Referee Reports (in sealed envelopes)
  • Other supporting documents – copies of birth certificate, academic certificate and University transcripts. 'Graduates should request degree granting institutions, other than UWI, to forward their official transcript directly to the Office of Graduate Studies and Research, Mona Campus as soon as possible.'
  • Receipt showing payment of the application fee of J$ 250. Payments can be made online using the UWI Mona E Commerce facility at: http://www.mona.uwi.edu/studinfo/fees or Paymaster, Bill Express, UWI (Mona) & Community Co-op. Credit Union Ltd, National Commercial Bank (NCB) island-wide or at the UWI Bursary Cashier from Monday to Friday, 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. The application fee can be paid cash, cheque or by using debit/credit cards. Only Manager’s Cheques and Certified Cheques are accepted.
Deadline for Receipt of Completed Applications
  • The deadline for receipt of completed application forms is September 30, 2008.

Orientation and Courses begin

  • For the 2009-10 Academic year, the M.Sc Degrees will begin on January 19, 2009.

Mode of Delivery

  • The current mode of delivery of the Programmes is primarily by face-to-face discussions, fieldwork and electronic delivery of course material. In the near future, full electronic/distance delivery will be available to facilitate students who reside far from the Mona Campus. It will, however, be necessary for all candidates to participate in periods of face-to-face discussion and fieldwork.

c)  Timeframe

These postgraduate programmes will be available on the basis of full-time or part-time registration:

  • 1 year for full-time registration
  • 2 years for part-time registration

d)  Tuition Fees (in US $ equivalents)

  • M.Sc Degrees                       US $ 8,500 per year
  • Part-time students will pay     US $ 4,250 per year over a two year period

Modes of payments

  • Fees may be paid in 1 installment – January
  • Fees may also be paid in 2 installments – January and April/May

Semester Dates for 2009

  • Semester 1                         January 19 – April 24, 2009
  • Summer term                      April 28 – July 31, 2009
  • Semester 2                         August 24 – December 11, 2009
