Given the challenges facing the Caribbean and the potential opportunities offered by a strong Tertiary Education sector, I would wish that the goals of our University of the West Indies must include being:

First in providing high quality, Caribbean relevant undergraduate and graduate programmes to as many students as our institution's resources might comfortably allow.
First in knowledge development and research in the Caribbean, becoming the leader in the world in producing new knowledge about "all things Caribbean".
First as a Centre of Intellectual growth and development in the Caribbean, and the Port of First Call for Caribbean Governments, Businesses and otherorganizations seeking Strategic and Policy advice.
