This AGREEMENT is a follow-up to the MOU concluded between The United Nations Environment Programme Nairobi, Kenya  and the University of the West Indies, Institute of Sustainable Development to undertake an Integrated Assessment Study in Jamaica as part of the Project on "Integrated Assessment of Trade-Related Policies in the Agricultural Sector: Supporting the Implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity." Between January 2007 and April 2009, an integrated assessment of the impact of the reform in the EU-ACP Sugar Protocol on the sugar industry in Jamaica was done.

Purpose of the project

This small-scale funding agreement will support the second phase of the project for the development and implementation of an integrated policy response.The objective is to build the capacity to assess, design and implement policies that maximise development gains from trade while minimizing the impact on biodiversity.  

The expected results include:

  • UNEP reference manual on trade and biodiversity.
  • Draft national plans for transition strategies for the sugar industry, economic development and energy security.
  • Capacity building training material for government policy analysts and advisors.
  • Final integrated assessment study published on-line.
